VSC Sewing Skill and Level Rating Categories:

Find your sewing skill level by using VSC’s sewing rating categories. This is the most accurate sewing skill rating system available.

Beginner: The client has zero OR some basic skills, knowledge, and experience in sewing but is only able to stitch basic straight lines.

Intermediate: The client has moderate skills, knowledge and experience in sewing. The client can sew using basic techniques, such as centered/railroad zippers or lapped zipper applications, straight waistbands, patch and hip pockets, tailored shirt collars, set-in sleeves, continuous plackets, shirts, shirt cuffs, turned-up hems and neckline facings.

Advance: The client has good skills, knowledge and experience in sewing. The client has knowledge of more advanced sewing techniques, such as invisible and fly-front zipper applications, tailored and contoured waistbands, shirt cuff plackets, welt and bound pockets, notch collars, jacket vents, and set-in sleeves.

Professional: The client is experienced and is making a professional living from her/his fashion design skills.

Program Title: Professional Sewing Techniques Short Program

Sewing Rating Category: Beginner

Program Description: This program will focus on different sewing techniques, such as basic stitches, seams, darts, zippers, pockets, waistbands, collars, facings, hem finishing, etc. The client will also learn to sew and construct two pieces of garments in six classes. Textbook notes will be provided for all sewing classes.

Program Accomplishments: The client will have up to four binders of full-scale sewing samples for their portfolio and future reference. She/he will learn up to 50 professional sewing techniques, as well as stitch together up to 40 sewing sample pieces. The client will also finish two professional garments that can be sold in a retail store or online.

Program Duration: 6 classes (each class is 3 hours)

Program Title: Industrial Sewing Techniques Short Program

Sewing Rating Category: Intermediate

Program Description: This program was created for the client who likes to challenge her/his sewing skills by learning more difficult techniques, such as fly-front zipper and invisible zipper applications, welt and bound pockets, tailored waistbands, jacket and skirt vents, etc. The client will choose two complex garments to sew, construct and finish in six classes. Textbook notes will be provided for all sewing classes.

Program Accomplishments: The client will have up to four binders in full-scale size sewing samples for their portfolio and future reference. She/he will learn to sew up to 30 different professional sewing techniques used in the fashion industry. The client will have up to 20 different sewing samples in their ring binders. The client will also complete two professional garments ready to be sold online or in a retail store.

Program Title: University/College Fashion Garments Portfolio Preparation Short Program

Sewing Rating Category: Beginner OR Intermediate

Program Description: This program is designed to help the client prepare and sew up to three garments for their portfolio submission entry to fashion design colleges and/or universities. The client will work from a retail commercial pattern. She/he will learn how to select the appropriate fabric for the style of design. The client will learn how to cut and sew the whole garment together from start to finish. These courses will help showcase the client’s portfolio creativity and her/his technical skills in all facets of design. The client will have to provide their own commercial patterns, fabrics, trimmings and notions.

Program Accomplishments: The client will learn new sewing skills, as well as gain more experience and confidence using sewing machines. The client will complete up to three professional-looking garments that can be used for their fashion college/university portfolio application submission.

Program Duration: 6 classes (each class is 3 hours)

Program Title: My Sewing Project Short Program

Sewing Rating Category: Beginner OR Intermediate

Program Description: This is a short program for the client who likes to take on a difficult project, such as a lined jacket or a prom dress. This is for the project(s) she/he wants to complete for a special event or for someone special in her/his life. The client will cut, sew, and finish one or two garments using a purchased commercial pattern. She/he will select and purchase their own fabrics and notions for use in their project(s).

Program Accomplishments: The client will complete one or two professional-looking garments in six classes and, at the same, the client will gain additional new sewing skills, experience and confidence.

Program Duration: 6 classes (each class is 3 hours)

Cost: $999 plus taxes (includes all white drafting paper, pattern hooks, hangers, garment bags, muslin fabric, zippers, notions, interface, and lining)

Program Title: Modern Menswear Design Short Program

Sewing Rating Category: Beginner OR Intermediate

Program Description: This menswear program was inspired by the famous Uomo Collezioni magazine. The client will have six classes to learn how to cut and sew two or three pieces of casual menswear. The client will learn menswear industrial sewing techniques that are not shown in textbooks or taught in schools. She/he will have to select and purchase their own commercial pattern, fabrics and notions from the fabric store. Textbook notes will be provided for all sewing classes.

Program Accomplishments: The client will finish and complete one or two pieces of professional-looking garments. At the same time, she/he will learn new menswear industrial sewing techniques not shown in any textbooks or taught in any schools.

Program Duration: 6 classes (each class is 3 hours)

Program Title: Dressmaking Couture Short Program

Sewing Rating Category: Beginner OR Intermediate

Program Description: This program is to help the client learn the whole process of making a formal dress from a commercial pattern purchased from the fabric store. She/he will choose their own design, fabrics, notions and trimmings. The client will learn to cut and sew, construct and assemble the entire garment from the beginning to the end. The client will have the opportunity to create and sew one or two garments in six classes. The client will have to provide their own commercial patterns, fabrics, trimmings and notions.

Program Accomplishments: The client will complete one or two professional-looking dresses, as well as learn professional sewing techniques and tricks of the trade from the bridal wear industry. Once a dress is finished, the client will have the option to wear it or sell it online.

Program Duration: 6 classes (each class is 3 hours)

Program Title: Women’s Casual Wear Design Short Program

Sewing Rating Category: Beginner OR Intermediate

Program Description: This program was inspired by the Collezioni Moda runway shows. The client will get inspired to create, cut and sew a garment that resembles those worn in the Collezioni Moda runway shows. She/he will learn to sew one or two professional-looking garments that can be sold online or in a retail store. The client will choose and purchase their own commercial pattern, fabrics, trimmings and notions from a fabric store to create this fun but sophisticated-looking outfit.

Program Accomplishments: The client will sew and complete one or two professional-looking outfits to be sold online or in a retail store.

Program Duration: 6 classes (each class is 3 hours)

Program Title: Bambini Children’s Wear Short Program

Sewing Rating Category: Beginner OR Intermediate

Program Description: This is a fun children’s wear sewing class, where the client chooses their own commercial pattern, fabrics and notions. The client will create three or four garment pieces for a child. The client will learn to cut, sew and finish all the garments in six classes. The client will have to provide their own commercial patterns, fabrics and notions.

Program Accomplishments: The client will finish four or five cute professional-looking children’s wear pieces and, at the same time, she/he will also learn new sewing skills.

Program Duration: 6 classes (each class is 3 hours)

Program Title: Knitwear Design Short Program

Sewing Rating Category: Beginner OR Intermediate

Program Description: The client will learn about and work with knit fabric to create and sew fitted or semi-fitted garments. She/he will learn how to operate overlock and cover stitch sewing machines. The client will learn to work with different knit fabrics to achieve a perfect fit. She/he will select and purchase her/his own commercial pattern, knit fabrics and trimmings. The client will cut, sew and create four or five knit garment pieces. The client will have to provide their own commercial patterns, fabrics and notions.

Program Accomplishments: The client will complete four or five knit garments and, at the same time, she/he will learn new sewing techniques for knit applications.

Program Duration: 6 classes (each class is 3 hours)

Program Title: Bridal Wear Sewing Techniques Short Program

Sewing Rating Category: Beginner OR Intermediate

Program Description: This program is designed to help the client learn how to sew a wedding dress. The client will choose and purchase her/his own commercial pattern, fabrics, lace and trimmings. The client will have six classes to create an elegant wedding dress to be worn by someone OR to be sold online to make a profit. The client will learn some of the tricks of the trade to cut, sew, applique lace and finish the entire dress. This program is great for someone who is interested in learning the skills needed to break into the bridal industry. The client will have to provide her/his own commercial patterns, fabrics and notions.

Program Accomplishments: The client will finish one professional-looking wedding dress and, at the same, she/he will learn many new professional sewing techniques not shown in textbooks or taught in schools.

Program Duration: 6 classes (each class is 3 hours)

Program Title: The Complete Industrial Sewing Techniques Long Program

Sewing Rating Category: Beginner OR Intermediate

Program Description: The client will have the unique opportunity to learn all sewing techniques from A-Z. This is a complete sewing program for the client who would like to learn all of the professional, industrial sewing techniques that are used in the apparel manufacturing sector. The client will learn up to 400 sewing techniques, as well as stitch together up to 250 sewing full-scale size samples for their portfolio and future reference. The client will also learn all of the industrial sewing techniques that are not shown in any textbooks or taught in any fashion institutions. She/he will learn all of the sewing tricks of the trade used by top-notch sewing professionals. The client will construct up to 12 complete full-scale size garments. The client will learn how to sew shirts, vests, shorts, pants, skirts, jackets, dresses, corsets/bustiers, knitwear, formalwear, etc. Textbook notes will be provided for all sewing classes.

Program Accomplishments: The client will have up to 25 binders filled with up to 250 sewing full-scale size samples for their portfolio and future reference. The client will learn up to 400 industrial sewing techniques, which mostly are not shown in any textbook or taught in any school. The client will gain enormous experience and confidence by completing this program. In this sewing program, the client will complete up to 12 garments, which they can use as their own portfolio or sell online. The client will also learn all the sewing tricks and secrets used by professionals to sew and construct the perfect garment.
