VSC Mini Sewing Skill and Level Rating Categories:

Find your sewing skill level by using VSC’s sewing rating categories. This is the most accurate sewing skill rating system available.

Beginner: The client has zero OR some basic skills, knowledge, and experience in sewing but is only able to stitch basic straight lines.

Intermediate: The client has moderate skills, knowledge and experience in sewing. The client can sew using basic techniques, such as centered/railroad zippers or lapped zipper applications, straight waistbands, patch and hip pockets, tailored shirt collars, set-in sleeves, continuous plackets, shirts, shirt cuffs, turned-up hems and neckline facings.

Advanced: The client has good skills, knowledge and experience in sewing. The client has knowledge of more advanced sewing techniques, such as invisible and fly-front zipper applications, tailored and contoured waistbands, shirt cuff plackets, welt and bound pockets, notch collars, jacket vents, and set-in sleeves.

Professional: The client is experienced and is making a professional living from her/his fashion design skills.

The client will have up to two binders of full-scale sewing samples for their portfolio and future reference. She/he will learn up to 50 professional sewing techniques, as well as stitch together up to 40 sewing sample pieces.

Sewing Rating Category: Advanced

Program Description: This program was created for the client who wants to a complex garment with more details on it. The client will choose one garment to cut and sew in two classes. Textbook notes will be provided for all sewing classes. The client will get to complete one professional garment.

Program Duration: 2 classes (each class is 3 hours)

Program Title: The Mini University/College Fashion Garments Portfolio Sewing Program

Sewing Rating Category: Intermediate or Advance

Program Description: This program is designed to help the client prepare and sew up to 2 garments for their portfolio submission entry to fashion design colleges and/or universities. The client will work from a retail commercial pattern. She/he will learn how to select the appropriate fabric for the style of design. The client will learn how to cut and sew the whole garment together from start to finish. These courses will help showcase the client’s portfolio creativity and her/his technical skills in all facets of design. The client will complete up to two professional-looking garments that can be used for their fashion college/university portfolio application submission.

Program Description: This is a mini program for the client who wants to take on a detailed dress project. This is for the project(s) she/he wants to complete for a special event or for someone special in her/his life. The client will cut, sew, and finish one garment using a purchased commercial pattern. She/he will select and purchase their own fabrics and notions for use in their project(s). The client will complete one professional-looking garment in three classes and at the same time will gain additional new sewing skills, experience and confidence.

Program Duration: 3 classes (each class is 3 hours)

Program Title: The Mini Menswear Design Sewing Program

Sewing Rating Category: Beginner OR Intermediate

Program Description: This mini menswear program is for the client who wants to learn basic menswear attire. The client will have three classes to learn how to cut and sew up to two pieces of casual/sportswear menswear. The client will learn menswear industrial sewing techniques that are not shown in textbooks or taught in schools. She/he will have to select and purchase their own commercial pattern, fabrics and notions from the fabric store. Textbook notes will be provided for all sewing classes. The client will finish and complete up to two professional-looking garments. At the same time, she/he will learn new menswear industrial sewing techniques not shown in any textbooks or taught in any schools.

Program Title: The Mini Formal Dressmaking Sewing Program

Sewing Rating Category: Intermediate or Advanced

Program Description: This program is to help the client learn the whole process of making a formal dress from a commercial pattern purchased from the fabric store. She/he will choose their own design, fabrics, notions and trimmings. The client will learn to cut and sew, construct and assemble the entire garment from the beginning to the end. The client will have the opportunity to create and sew one garment in three classes. The client will complete one professional-looking dress, as well as learn professional sewing techniques and tricks of the trade from the bridal wear industry. Once a dress is finished, the client will have the option to wear it or sell it online.

Program Title: The Mini Womenswear Design Sewing Program

Sewing Rating Category: Intermediate or Advanced

Program Description: The client will get inspired to create, cut and sew a garment that resembles those worn in the Ready-to-Wear runway shows. She/he will learn to sew up to two professional-looking garments that can be sold online or in a retail store. The client will choose and purchase their own commercial pattern, fabrics, trimmings and notions from a fabric store to create this fun but sophisticated-looking outfit. The client will sew and complete up to two professional-looking outfits to be sold online or in a retail store.

Program Duration: 3 classes (each class is 3 hours)

Program Title: The Mini Children’s Wear Sewing Program

Sewing Rating Category: Intermediate

Program Description: This is a fun children’s wear sewing class, where the client chooses their own commercial pattern, fabrics and notions. The client will create up to two garments for a child. The client will learn to cut, sew and finish all the garments in three classes. The client will have to provide their own commercial patterns, fabrics and notions. The client will finish up to two cute professional-looking children’s wear pieces and, at the same time, she/he will also learn new sewing skills.

Program Duration: 3 classes (each class is 3 hours)

Program Title: The Mini Knitwear Design Sewing Program

Sewing Rating Category: Beginner OR Intermediate

Program Description: The client will learn about and work with knit fabric to create and sew fitted or semi-fitted garments. She/he will learn how to operate overlock and cover stitch sewing machines. The client will learn to work with different knit fabrics to achieve a perfect fit. She/he will select and purchase her/his own commercial pattern, knit fabrics and trimmings. The client will cut, sew and create up two knit garment pieces. The client will complete up to three knit garments and, at the same time, she/he will learn new sewing techniques for knit applications.
